I just read your article in Fishmonster magazine. We did something very similar.. back in 2006 we quit our jobs, bought the boat (in Deltaville VA), sold everything, and moved aboard.. spent about 4 months fixing her up, first making her a good “power boat”, then after getting down to Marathon, we made her a great sailboat(new rigging and new/rebuilt sails) In March of 07 we headed to the Bahamas where we left boating buddies to continue on down the islands all the way to Trinidad, Tobago and a few out islands of Venezuela, then back up the islands to some we missed on the way down. May of 08 saw us heading back through the Abacos and then on up the east coast. Destination, the Hudson River about 100 miles north of NYC and about an hour from our families, who had not yet seen our “home”. Running low on cruising funds, we decided not to head back to “corporate” America and started our Chartering business.. We are currently in Marathon now where we charter in the winter, on the Hudson in the summers.. I really miss the islands, beaches, snorkeling and the people.. truly take your time, enjoy and make the best of all of it!! My favorite place was Culebra(spanish virgin Islands) pick up a mooring on the west coast, beautiful beaches, and reefs that you can swim to off the boat.. Fair winds!!

  2. Hi Laura,

Thanks for the comment! We will be sure to take your advice. We are still in the Bahamas currently and look at the charts each day to decide where we will be next. I hope you continue to enjoy my column in Fishmonster!

    Take Care,

    Hi folks,
I’ve enjoyed your website on several ocassions after meeting up with Jon’s sister Carol back in the spring this year. I’ve been friendly with Carol since she taught me art in high school and mentored a group of us in a church ministry class. Anyway, when visiting with her the topic of sailing came up (along with my interest and begginer class experience in my own 15′ sail boat) and she shared briefly your endeavors. It is people like you who inspire people like me to continue following a dream. Thanks for sharing, and oh, I love the photos too. Take care, Errol Greig, Jr.
